What are orthotics?
Prescription Orthotics are custom-made devices which correct your individual foot problems by treating or adjusting abnormal foot motion; providing support, stability, and control. They also help correct problems associated with knee, hip and lower back pain. Orthotics are usually made of high-impact materials and are designed to be inserted right into your shoes, similar to arch supports. Orthotics will help to improve overall balance, absorb shock, and relieve pressure on uncomfortable areas of the individual foot.
Why would I need orthotics?
Since feet are the major weight-bearing part of the body, foot pain is common; half of the Americans polled by the American Podiatric Medical Association had missed a day of work because of foot problems. The foot contains 26 bones and many small structures which support and balance the weight of the entire body. Walking puts up to 1.5 times one's body weight on the foot, and humans walk an average of 1,000 miles per year. Orthotics help to correct biomechanical imbalances of the foot and ankle. Over time, abnormal motion of your feet can lead to wide variety of ailments including but not limited to: bunions, Morton's Neuroma, Hallux Rigidus, Plantar Fascitis, hammer toes, Achilles Tendonitis, and arthritis.
Athletes use orthotics to enhance their performance and increase comfort. Orthotics eliminate muscle stress and fatigue by removing the need for muscles to compensate for undetectable imbalances, which promotes better muscle function and enhances overall performance. Orthotics can help prevent injury or deformity from occurring or stop the progression of existing problems. However, orthotics can provide protection and comfort for your feet, even if no major symptoms exist. Orthotics are also useful for people with arthritic or diabetic foot conditions, people who are very overweight, required to be on their feet for extended periods of time, or have an inconsistency with their leg length.
Will my insurance cover my orthotics?
One pair of custom orthotics costs $310. Payment is due at the time of visit in which the patient is evaluated. Insurance will usually cover the cost of orthotics. As a courtesy we will verify your insurance for you. However, you are ultimately responsible for verifying the accuracy of what we quoted. The billing code for orthotics is L3020 and we
encourage patients to check orthotics coverage with their insurance company. We do offer a 20% discount to cash pay patients.
What occurs during an orthotics evaluation?
- Slow-Motion Digital Video Gait Analysis:
The video-taping of gait allows a frame-by-frame analysis, to help determine what phases of the gait cycle abnormal motions are occurring. Also, we review the video with the patient so he/she may have a better understanding of the contributing factors to their complaints.
- Foot Plate Pressure Distribution/Harris Mat:
A foot print is used to identify the pressure distributions on the bottom of the foot during the stance phase of a gait cycle.
- Biomechanical Examination of the lower half:
The lower half of the body is scanned for abnormal motions in both unweighted and standing positions. Static alignments of the joints are then measured. Also, changes in alignment will be noted during various tasks such as squatting, and single leg standing.
- Lower Extremity and Trunk Strength Testing:
Muscle testing will be performed to find any related weakness. Also, the ability of the trunk musculature to stabilize will be assessed. We look at trunk stability because of its important role in ensuring efficient function of the lower half of the body.
